Dear Boomer,
It’s no secret that when it comes to wisdom and advice, you have a lot to offer. But it can be hard for me, a Gen Zer, to take your words seriously sometimes. Here are 13 reasons why I don’t always take your wisdom seriously and how we can bridge the gap between our generations to create understanding.
Ageism
It can be challenging to overlook the ageist stereotypes that still exist within your generation. These stereotypes range from labeling my generation as indolent and self-entitled to categorizing us as “spoiled” and “privileged.” Sadly, ageism continues to hinder meaningful mutual respect.
Outdated Values
It’s possible that some of your values may be outdated, which could make it challenging for me to consider your wisdom fully. Perhaps you’re rooted in the past, while I tend to focus more on the present and future.
Outdated Technology Knowledge
With the rapid advancement of technology in recent years, I find it difficult to trust advice from individuals who are not adept at using the latest gadgets and applications.
Lack of Empathy
I sometimes find it challenging to relate to your advice, as they may not fully comprehend the challenges and experiences that my generation goes through.
Different Work Ethics
My approach to work differs from yours, largely due to shifts in the job market. As a result, I may not find your work advice relevant anymore.
Different Approaches to Education
My generation has a distinct approach to learning compared to yours, thanks to the growing popularity of online education and the gig economy.
Different Approaches to Money
My approach to managing money differs from yours. While you tend to prioritize frugality and avoiding debt, I am more inclined toward investing in the stock market. It’s important to recognize that our financial decisions may not always align.
Different Life Goals
As a member of Generation Z, my life goals differ from yours. This is mainly due to the ever-evolving job market and economic conditions. It’s possible that I may not be inclined to take your advice seriously if it contradicts my own personal goals.
Different Lifestyle Choices
My lifestyle preferences may differ from yours. I might not share the same interests in hobbies, vacations, or music as you do.
Different Priorities
As someone juggling work and family obligations, my priorities may differ from yours. Therefore, I may have difficulty taking advice seriously if it doesn’t align with my own values and goals.
Different Beliefs
As someone who values the advancements in science and technology, my beliefs may differ from those of your generation, which could potentially affect my willingness to consider your advice.
Different Communication Styles
As a member of Generation Z, my communication methods differ greatly from yours, largely due to the prevalence of texting and social media. It’s important to consider these differences when offering advice, as they can greatly impact the effectiveness of your guidance.
Different Worldviews
As a generation, we value diversity and are receptive to differing perspectives. If advice is not aligned with our worldviews, it may not be taken seriously.
